New website helps reduce waste

A new website launched on Wednesday 26 October to help people reduce, reuse and recycle almost anything in Oxfordshire. Produced by Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (OWP) the Recycling A-Z website enables people to select an unwanted item and find out all the things they can do to keep it out of landfill.
Local charities and organisations involved in reusing unwanted items will came together at local charity Emmaus’ Oxford’s Secondhand Superstore to launch the site.
Wyon Stansfeld Director at Emmaus says: “We get lots of people donating their unwanted items to us and others coming to buy perfectly reasonable secondhand items at cheap prices. We hope the new A-Z will mean more people think about how their items can generate money for charities such as ourselves rather than simply putting them in landfill.”
Cllr Lorraine Lindsay-Gale is chairman for OWP, she says: “The public are always asking us how to get rid of particular item and we hope this new online A-Z will help answer those questions and highlight just how many things can be reused and recycled across the county.”
In addition to recycling and reuse options, the website also links to hire shops and organisations that repair broken items.
Lorraine adds: “The general public really embrace all initiatives that are put in place to help them to be greener with their waste. We hope the new guide will not only increase recycling but mean more people consider repairing a broken item rather than simply throwing it away and buying a new one.”
