Weird and wonderful waste

A distinctly Halloween theme links some of the more obscure items taken to Oxfordshire’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) recently.
A glass eye, sets of false teeth, a coffin and even a tarantula in its cage would seem like the perfect items for a Halloween party, but in fact all these items turned up at one of the county’s seven recycling sites.
Cllr Lorraine Lindsay-Gale is chairman for Oxfordshire Waste Partnership and is responsible for waste management at the county council. She says: “People are keen to recycle as much as possible and we get asked what to do with all kinds of rubbish. We now recycle more than ever such as electrical items, energy saving light bulbs and batteries, but this always leads to people wanting to do more.”
“As well as these unusual items we’ve also been asked about a 6ft stuffed bear that someone no longer wanted! We normally get more everyday items on site but if people aren’t sure what to recycle they can check out our new Recycling A-Z at www.oxfordshirewaste.gov.uk.”
The seven HWRCs across Oxfordshire currently have a recycling rate of almost 60% which includes the more standard items such as metal, wood, cardboard and clothing.
